When my wife recently spent a week at the esteemed fitness and hiking retreat, The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu, I had no idea how much it would actually impact my health and fitness. She returned with a bunch of healthy recipes, health tips and exercise tips that she has been passing onto me and our family.
Much of the activity at the retreat itself is unsustainable for those of us who live in the real world. While not technically a weight loss vacation, the program includes 4-6 hours per day of hiking, along with daily naps, massage, and other fitness activities. Meals consist of low calorie, organic vegetarian fare. Pretty much, if you tried to do that on a full time basis you would end up broke and hungry unless you are independently wealthy.
Fortunately, the staff at the Ranch understands that while their schedule may not be sustainable for everyday people, they can provide their guests with the education and a strategy that can make living healthy in one’s real life much more attainable. They provided us with a book of recipes that can be easily prepared, and tips like preparing delicious homemade granola for breakfast, or replacing white rice with quinoa or brown rice.
Without wholesale changes in my exercise habits I am managed to lose 15 pounds since the time my wife attended last year, and it is the kind of healthy weight loss that is likely to stick. With our improved eating habits I expect to see my health continue to improve. I feel great and my blood pressure and cholesterol are at better levels than they have been in a decade. Thanks Ranch at Live Oak Malibu for improving my health, and the funny thing is I did not |
